It was designed to serve as a Centre for educational consultation and liaison for professional development, which is very necessary in education as it is in other professions. The Institute serves as a link between the University and other governmental educational agencies, NGOs and other stakeholders in the Education industry. Its functions fall into four broad categories which are: Research Functions The Institute of Education is primarily research-oriented. To foster and enhance the research functions, the Institute of Education publishes one professional journal, the "Review of Education" for the dissemination of research findings and educational developments. In-service Education via Workshops The Institute of Education is involved in in-service training of teachers at various levels of Education on Curriculum Planning and Implementation, Education Administration, Educational Measurement and Evaluation, through planned workshops. The workshop in most cases, is initiated, planned and executed by the Institute, based on identified critical problem areas in any level of the Education industry; and often sponsored by government, NGOs or other private organizations. Teaching Functions Academic staff of the Institute hold parallel appointments in specific departments where they engage in teaching functions while carrying out research and administrative functions within the Institute. The Institute organizes and runs an in-service Sandwich Programme in courses leading to the Post-graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and Bachelors Degrees (B.A., B.Sc., or B.Ed.) of the University of Nigeria for holders of NCE, University Diploma or equivalent qualifications.
